What to do in Baños when it rains? The adventure never stops!
Baños de Agua Santa, known as the "adventure capital" of Ecuador, is a destination that can be enjoyed 365 days a year. Although many people associate it with outdoor sports and sunny days, rain doesn't stop you from continuing to explore and experience unforgettable experiences.
If you find yourself in Baños and the weather changes your plans, don't worry: there are many exciting, relaxing, and cultural activities you can do indoors or even while the rain falls.
Here are the best ideas to keep your adventure going!
1. Relax in natural hot springs
Nothing beats enjoying a hot bath while the rain gently falls around you. Baños has several hot springs, ideal for relaxing and recharging your batteries. Some popular options:
- Termas de la Virgen: right at the foot of the waterfall of the same name, right in the city center.
- Santa Ana or El Salado: quieter and surrounded by nature.
The combination of hot water, steam, and rain creates a unique and comforting atmosphere.
2. Enjoy a massage or spa treatment
The humid climate is the perfect excuse to pamper yourself in one of Baños' many spas. You can opt for relaxing massages, Andean herb baths, mud therapy, aromatherapy, or even energetic treatments with volcanic stones.
Many accommodations also offer private spa services. A great way to enjoy the rain in comfort!
3. Explore the city center in search of culture and flavor
Even if it's raining, downtown Baños is perfect for a leisurely stroll with an umbrella:
- Visit the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary of Agua Santa, famous for its history and architecture.
- Visit the Basilica Museum, which tells local legends and ancient relics.
- Enjoy artisanal coffee, hot chocolate, or a delicious pizza in one of the cafes overlooking the volcano (clouds permitting).
4. Adventures in the rain (yes, you can!)
The rain doesn't have to dampen your adventurous spirit. In fact, some activities are more enjoyable when it rains, such as:
- Canyoning: If you're going to get wet, do it in style! The waterfalls are more powerful and the ride is even more exciting.
- Canopy/Bungee Jumping: Some companies continue to operate in moderate rain, always prioritizing safety.
- Short hiking trails or viewpoints: If you're well-equipped with a poncho or raincoat, you can visit places like the Mirador de Bellavista or the Sendero a la Virgen, where the mist gives the landscape a mystical touch.
5. Stay in a place with a view and enjoy the moment
If you decide to stay in your accommodation, look for one with large windows or a view of the mountains or the Tungurahua volcano. Listening to the rain while sipping hot tea, reading a book, or watching movies can also be a very special way to enjoy Baños calmly.
Rain doesn't mean your trip is ruined; quite the opposite: Baños offers a range of possibilities for all tastes and climates. From relaxation to adventure, the magic of the place remains even in the rain.
So now you know, if the sky clouds over and it starts to rain, don't put away your backpack or your adventurous spirit.
There's plenty to do and discover, no matter the weather!
